Organizational Network Analysis
What is ONA?
Everyone is familiar with the organization chart that displays who works where and who reports to whom. However, today's companies do not operate in that static environment. Instead, we need insight into how the organization really works. Organization Network Analysis is a fancy name for a way of finding out who knows who in a company and who knows what. The result is a crystal clear graphic immediately comprehensible to anyone. The company can immediately see how (and through whom) information flows through the organization. To make this clear to you, here is a very simple example of a typical kite chart that shows the ONA for a department.
Why is ONA Important?
Think of the knowledge in your organization as electricity flowing through a building. If one transformer blows, an entire department comes down. If another transformer blows, three or four people are down. If another transformer blows, business continues as usual. It is essential for knowledge management, that a company to understand their knowledge points of vulnerability and to seize any possibilities for improvement in workgroups and productivity.KnowHow '06 Conference
